PRIMER 5 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This lists a number of common problems experienced with various versions of PRIMER 5.

Q. When PRIMER starts I get an error that the file hhctrl.ocx is missing.

A. This is a system file that is necessary for the help system used by PRIMER 5. PRIMER 5 uses the HTML help system which is used by newer Windows programs. The necessary system files are already present on newer versions of windows such as Windows 98, Me, and 2000 or later. For earlier versions of Windows it is necessary to install Internet Explorer 4 or later, as indicated in the 'System Requirements'.

Q. I cannot get the Help functions to work.

A. You are probably running Windows 95 or Windows NT4 and need to upgrade Internet Explorer to version 4 or later. If you have Internet Explorer 3 you may be able to fix the problem by running the program hhupd.exe which has been included on some of the PRIMER CDs.

Q. Printing of results and/or plots does not work properly.

A. Some earlier versions of PRIMER 5 have printing problems on some systems. Contact technical support, indicating your version of PRIMER.

Q. When I install PRIMER 5 I get an error that the file graphs32.ocx fails to register.

A. Re-run the installation and select the 'Repair' option.

Q. I have installed PRIMER 5 on a Windows NT or 2000 system as administrator. When another ordinary user tries to use PRIMER he gets error 1706.

A. There is a problem with the Microsoft Installer system on some Windows NT/2000 systems. This is the Program Installation management software that is used by newer Windows programs. Contact technical support for a fix, indicating your version of PRIMER.

Q. I am having problems importing Excel files.

A. You need Excel 97 or later installed on the PC for this to work. Close the file first if it is open in Excel.
